The Jade Peacock once belonged to a miserly old man, who had won her in a game of Tavern Dice on the docks of an old village near Shellfish Bay. He travelled with the Peacock, charging travellers two coppers a piece to cast eyes upon the rare and elegant creature. The Jade Peacock herself grew to tolerate the miser. He fed her sufficiently and kept her warm and dry. He understood that he needed her much more than she needed him and thus respected her as well as he could.
One day as they were travelling, two orcish bandits approached the miser and his rare bird.
“Give us yer green pigeon!” One of them yelled at the old man, spewing chunks of undigested meat onto his wrinkled visage.
“Yeah, give ‘er to us good!” Belched the other, stinking of rotten tomatoes.
The miser, who in his younger days had spent some time studying magic, began to calculate the circumstance before him. Having grown attached to the Jade Peacock, he felt it would be a betrayal to hand her over to these oafish, stinking, drunken orc men. The old man reached into his pocket without thinking, and remembered the set of dice he had been carrying with him since Shellfish Bay. Quickly, he spoke an incantation that was inaudible to the orcs. They continued their approach.
Then, in a moment, she was gone. He felt the dice in his palm heat up, almost scorching the ancient flesh of his hands. He looked at the two orcs, and earnestly said, “What pigeon?”
The orcs stared blankly for a moment, then, realizing he had nothing of value to them wandered off in the direction of a nearby tavern. The old man pulled the dice out of his pocket. They had transformed. What were once plain bone dice now danced with swirls of green, blue and white. The miser inspected them closer, and was nearly toppled over when he heard a distinctive cooing come from the dice themselves.
It is unknown what happened to the old man, however his legend lives on and the dice which carry the soul of his Jade Peacock will exist as a simple reminder of this tale and the misers captive bird.
